2019 photo competition

2019 photo competition – Nature in Action

Almost 40 entries were received from eight photographers in our third photo competition. The photos were judged by Drew Lyness, until recently our regional RSPB Volunteer Group Co-ordinator, whose Top 10 photos formed the basis of an Audience Ballot by our Local Group members for their favourite.

The Judge's favourite photos, together with his comments were:

1. Red Kite ‘Lift off!’ Berwick Bassett, Wilts February 2019 by Derek Griffin
"A beautiful capture, and I love how the composition draws your attention to its eye, which is wonderfully sharp. An excellent photo of nature in action."

This photo was also the audience’s overwhelming favourite and so won the cash prize that was presented by Ian Parker, the competition’s organiser.

It is also one of the photos in the set of five different blank greeting cards that are available (until sold out) for just £4 on the Member’s Table at our monthly meeting. Picture of set at the bottom of this page.

2. Kingfisher ‘What do I do now?’ Water Gardens, Hemel Hempstead January 2018 by Ian Parker

"A superb photo of a kingfisher, in clear focus. The plain background keeps your attention on the bird, proudly showing off its prize catch. The fact that it was taken locally to the Group is also a nice touch."

3. Starling ‘Sprucing up!’ St Kilda, Scotland, May 2018

"The bird in the photo is in fact female, as you can tell by the pink bill base. A lovely composition here, which captures the preening behaviour of this beloved garden bird."
